I made a sake cocktail

2026.07.28Turned leftover sake into a cocktail for the first time — it was better than I expected.

A bottle of sake left over from a friend's place had been sitting in my fridge for a while. I usually prefer drinking sake straight and had never mixed it into anything before, but it had been open way too long, so I decided to turn it into a cocktail for the first time.

I made a "Marine Delight." Looking it up, it turns out bartender Kazuo Ueda created it to commemorate the launch of the cruise ship Shin Nippon Maru — deliberately kept low in alcohol so you could drink it on deck in the sea breeze.

The method is simple.

  1. Add ice and all the ingredients to a shaker
  2. Shake well
  3. Pour into the glass without ice

It comes out a sea-like turquoise blue, which looks pretty striking. I've had cocktails before that looked great but didn't taste like much, so I was half-skeptical taking the first sip — but it was better than I expected. I figured the Cointreau and blue curaçao would bring a sharp citrus bitterness, but it turned out completely mellow instead. The sake's sweetness came through clearly, in a good way I didn't see coming.

Next time I open a bottle of sake, I'll probably make this again.

Cointreau (About 40%)

A French orange liqueur (white curaçao) made by macerating and distilling bitter and sweet orange peels in neutral spirit — the world's first "triple sec." Known for its orange aroma and mellow sweetness.

Blue Curaçao

White curaçao (the same style of orange liqueur as Cointreau) with blue coloring added, mainly to make cocktails look more striking. The taste is close to white curaçao.

Grapefruit juice

Store-bought 100% juice. Its tartness and light bitterness balance out the cocktail's sweetness.
